Benjamin Creme: Christ as a Universal Principle

Many groups, ...see the 'return' of the Christ in terms of the manifestation of the Christ Principle in humanity: when this principle demonstrates widely enough in us, they believe, the 'Christ' will have returned, the 'second coming' will have taken place. With this I cannot disagree, but see it as only one of His three modes of Reappearance.

When in June 1945, Maitreya announced His intention to return, He indicated that this would be in three phases:

1. The overshadowing of the minds of those active disciples (mostly in the political field as leaders of nations) who could be impressed on mental levels;

2. The outflow of the Christ Principle through the hearts of humanity in general; and

3. His physical presence in the world.

If I emphasize the physical presence it is because (a) it is a fact in my experience; (b) humanity needs to know and recognize Him as the World Teacher; (c) it is too vague and 'easy' to talk about "the Christ Principle" while humanity has far to go in the demonstration of that principle.

In any case, I do not believe that my presentation of Maitreya's return into the physical life of humanity in any way rules out His being seen as the Embodiment of the (universal) Christ Principle. That is the measure of His achievement.

Questions & Answers with Benjamin Creme

Q. Are Maitreya and the Christ really one entity? Is not Maitreya only a pure channel for Christic energy, hence the confusion?

A. The term "Christ" is the translation into Greek of the Jewish term "Messiah," and Maitreya would prefer to be seen as a teacher rather than as "The Messiah," which HE says can create opposition.

Maitreya has full title to the term "Christ" in that He is so advanced, so pure, that He can actually embody -- and not simply channel --the energy of the Christ Principle or Consciousness, the energy of evolution per se. From Him it flows through the hearts of all humanity, awakening them to a new spiritual (not necessarily religious) approach to life.

Q. Rather than one 'leader' appearing as an example and teacher, can there not occur a more or less simultaneous 'awakening' of a large number of 'Masters'? i.e. an evolutionary jump on its own?

A. This is an idea common to a number of so-called 'new age' groups who find the idea of one teacher or leader somehow 'old age'. The idea has a certain basis, in that Aquarius will be the age of group consciousness and achievement and a great evolutionary leap will be made by humanity. But Masters cannot be made 'spontaneously' but only as a result of the evolutionary processes, whether that is fast or slow, and Maitreya is emerging as the head and leader of His group of Masters, who are externalizing Their work onto the outer physical plane. That is His primary purpose in reappearing.

The Tibetan Master:

We can freely aid in the reconstruction work which the Christ proposes, if we will familiarize ourselves and all men whom we can contact with the following facts:

1. That the reappearance of Christ is imminent.
2. That the Christ, immanent in every human heart, can be evoked in recognition of His appearance.
3. That the circumstances of His return are only symbolically related in the world Scriptures; this may produce a vital change in the preconceived ideas of humanity.
4. That the major required preparation is a world at peace; however that peace must be based on an educated goodwill, which will lead inevitably to right human relations, and, therefore, to the establishment (figuratively speaking) of lines of light between nation and nation, religion and religion, group and group, man and man.

If we can succeed in presenting these four ideas to the world at large, and thus in overcoming the intelligent criticism that all that is said is too vague, prophetic, and visionary, we shall have done much. It is possible surely that the ancient truism that "the mind is the slayer of the real" may be fundamentally true where the mass of humanity is concerned and that the purely intellectual approach (which rejects the vision & refuses to accept the unprovable) may be far more at fault than the anticipation of the Knowers of God and the expectant Multitude...

The Christ who will return will not be like the Christ Who (apparently) departed. He will not be a "man of sorrows"; He will not be a silent pensive figure; He will be the enunciator of spiritual statements which will not necessitate interpretation and receive the wrong interpretation, because He will be present to indicate the true meaning.

The Son of God is on His way and He cometh not alone. His advance guard is already here and the Plan which they must follow is already made and clear. Let recognition be the aim.
