Between 1988 and 1993 Maitreya, the World Teacher, released a series of forecasts and analyses of the current state of the world, as well as fragments of His teachings. Through one of His close associates in the Asian community of London, these were released to Share International for publication and were sent to the world’s media as press releases. Phrased in the words of His associate, Maitreya’s spiritual teachings are arranged here by subject in the hope of facilitating the reader’s study and application in daily life.

Maitreya's teachings
Attachment

Maitreya's teachings discuss how passions, possessiveness and attachments enslave the Self. (1334 words)

Attachment means energy is using the Self. (Share International, December 1989)

Nothing belongs to you. Everything belongs to the Lord. If you are honest with yourself, you are honest with the Lord. If you are sincere with yourself, you are sincere with the Lord. (December 1990)

If people feel that things around them belong to them, this becomes a new 'ism'. If possessiveness is fostered, this leads to a process of self-destruction.

In creation everything is interdependent. If you claim property, husband, wife as mine, this will lead to confusion and chaos. (March 1990)

Maitreya says: “Market forces mean one surrenders. The Self is made to surrender to the unknown forces of life with a view to maximizing profit. Market forces generate possessiveness. Possessiveness can only be cherished with attachments. Attachments can only be maintained by passions in life.

“The essence of market forces is greed and separatism. The more one is attached to these forces, the more they create cells of imprisonment. This leads to spiritual bankruptcy and mental disequilibrium.

“The mental body or pattern is controlled on the physical plane by the brain. When the mental body experiences disequilibrium, the brain is affected and is not able to control the physical organs.” (July/August 1990)

of detachment

If you do not know yourself as the Self, you can become attached to body, mind or spirit.

If you are attached to the body, you will find that there is no end to material desires and sensual gratifications. Greed grows, the search continues, and satisfaction always eludes you. If you are attached to the mind, you can become entangled in thought constructions, ideologies, 'isms' to which there is no end. The more you search, the further afield you go, the more you find, there will always be unknown regions. In fact, you can get lost here. You do not feel fulfilled.

If you are attached to spirit (power) you will dabble in regions which can never be fully understood, via a host of 'isms' such as occultism, spiritualism, etc. Maitreya points out that to dabble means to misuse.

As an example, spiritualists believe they can contact the dead. According to Maitreya, so-called mediums are in fact 'tuning in' to vibrations which are still within the realm of mind, spirit and body. Maitreya asks, “Where is the Self who has departed?” He is no longer in the body, which has been either cremated or buried. He is no longer in the mind, which the Self experienced, as a temple of the Lord, for a fixed period of time. Likewise, the Self is not the power (spirit) which is experienced by the Self as a temple of the Lord. Maitreya says, “No spiritualist can recall the Self.” Since you are the Self, who is the medium recalling? Only a Master can recall the Self, on rare occasions dictated by spiritual law.

This is why Maitreya advises, “Do not be attached to the physical form of a Master. Otherwise, when He is not there, you will grieve. When you know yourself as the Self within, such grief disappears.”

Jesus warned against the misuse of powers. Maitreya says, “Even if you come across them, even if they develop in you, do not become attached to them. Do not try to possess them. If you do, they will destroy you. They are not yours.” (December 1988)

Ideologies can be thought of as either negative or positive currents. If you are attached to negative currents, they will destroy you. If you are attached to positive currents, the Self will be taken into unknown regions of mind, spirit and body, and it will be very difficult for the Self to 'come back', because there is no end to this process.

An example of a negative current is attachment to a particular political or religious or national sect to the exclusion of all other sects — a stance which necessarily creates opposition, strife.

An example of a positive current is attachment to meditation and allied techniques to the exclusion of all else, instanced by some yogis in the Himalayas, such that the heartbeat, body heat, etc, can be controlled. Even powers of materialization and de-materialization can be developed. Maitreya asks: “Is this salvation? No. Such a person is not free.” This is why Maitreya teaches, “Be detached from my powers.” If you are tempted, and you learn to do these things, you will not know how to control them and they will destroy you.

Jesus was also aware of human evolution and human destiny when he said, “Greater things shall ye do”, but he also cautioned against allowing oneself to be tempted by these powers. (December 1988)

Maitreya has often said: “When you see Me, do not run after Me.” The meaning of this is: 'When you see My powers, do not become attached to them.' According to Maitreya, when people become attached to these powers and try to develop them, they can become gurus, saints, yogis, etc. But this is not the meaning of salvation. (July/August 1989)

Many teachers and gurus have fallen through attachment to powers which manifested themselves through them either as a result of natural development or through the grace of the Lord. As soon as you try to claim anything for yourself, as soon as you identify with those powers instead of understanding that you are the immortal Self and the powers belong to the Lord, you are lost. This is a difficult test, and even today the lives of many followers who identified with their guru or teacher have been shattered when the teacher or guru, forgetting the Self within, attaches himself to material, mental or spiritual powers. Thus some begin to accumulate wealth, some misuse thought and imprison others mentally, creating divisions and intolerance instead of respecting the freedom of each individual, and others become attached to power and misuse it. This is why Maitreya says, “Do not become attached to My spiritual powers.” (December 1988)

The people who are frightened are those who are attached. There are religious leaders who are more attached to 'spiritual' power than politicians are to temporal power. (June 1989)

In the spiritual world, spiritual power misused is destructive. Misuse stems from attachment. This is why Maitreya says, “Be detached even from spirit” (ie, spiritual powers). (Jan/Feb. 1990)

There is a mischievous energy in nature born of the power of attachment. (October 1990)

This energy, once released, must find its outlet. If it is not released through firing weapons, this same force will express itself in the forces of nature and we can expect more floods, earthquakes and other 'natural disasters' of various kinds. (October 1990)

If you aspire to certain goals and multiply your desires with attachment this will destroy you. If the environment changes and it is not what a person wants, it can lead to suicide. (October 1991)

Maitreya said: “Karma (conditioned activity) becomes Dharma (the way) through cleansing of mind, spirit and body. This cleansing is achieved through honesty, sincerity and detachment. If one is attached to creation this is involution, not evolution. This is why you must not be tempted by powers. You can do all these miraculous things but do not become attached. Be what you are. Your life will fall into the right perspective. The Self observes the karmas (activities) without becoming attached. Enjoyment is then possible.” (December 1991)
