The Supreme Being, Individuality and Identity

A compilation of fragments of Maitreya's teachings. (1315 words)

The truth of divinity: it is not outside, but situated in the heart and, simultaneously, in the universe, in creation everywhere. (Apr 1989)

Divinity is not ‘outside’ but situated simultaneously in the heart and in the universe, in all of creation. The Self is now beginning to experience its own, distinct identity. The One who sustains the Self and makes Him aware cannot be limited; He is universal. (Nov 1988)

Divinity does not belong to anyone. It cannot be possessed. It must be revered, respected. If you touch it, it will disappear.
Blessings can only be experienced. If you try to impose them, they are curses. (Apr 1989)

“Since everything is God, He can appear anywhere or everywhere. How is it that God created individual forms? These too, are God. He can appear in absolute or relative form. How can you say the Almighty cannot come in human flesh?” (Oct 1988)

Maitreya says: “The Lord is not evil. You (the Self) are not evil. Because you cleave to form you are attached to traditions, creeds, ideologies. When you part from them you experience regrets, unhappiness. In Reality neither form nor belief divide. In the Light, in Oneness, there are no arguments; everyone can see. In darkness, 20 people will argue. Because you cannot communicate with Reality you experience contradictions and chaos.” (Jun 1989)

Everyone will accept that there is someone behind creation — the Almighty who has no human form or name. Those who go to church or to the temple or the mosque, and those who have no religion at all, will respect this concept. Common sense will show this to be so. (Jun 1989)

What does Maitreya mean when He says, “It is your heritage to sit at the ‘right side’ of the Almighty”? We can see it this way: 70 per cent is creation and 30 per cent is the Supreme Being. In that so-called 30 per cent, the Self is resting, there is no relationship such as exists in creation. The 30 per cent is the kingdom of the Almighty. So, the Self is in the domain of 30 per cent, observing creation, the other 70 per cent.
In creation things evolve. There is ‘high and low’, ‘good and bad’. Creation takes place in the 70 per cent.
There is no creation in the 30 per cent. The Self, seated in that 30 per cent, remains free from the cyclic phenomena of creation.
When creation is approached from the Self you can view it from the standpoint of the Almighty, because within the domain of the 30 per cent you remain as the Almighty does: non-participant. In this domain there is grace, bliss, happiness.
All the ‘isms’ are in the 70 per cent. In the 30 per cent you are free from ‘isms’.
Gurus, saints, scientists are penetrating the how/when/where of the 70 per cent domain. In this way, they are goaded into unknown problems of life, into attachments. For example, you decide you like a domain and don’t want to move from it.
Maitreya says: “When you try to be what you are, you begin to sit next to the Almighty. Here there is no creation as such, but a window to look into creation.” (Jul/Aug 1990)

What flowers naturally from within is divine, but imposition from without is undivine. Maitreya says: “When you are honest, sincere and detached, who is your master? The Lord is in the heart. If you have found the Lord in the heart you do not go out looking for anyone. You fulfil your duties, you become what you are; you are the happiest person on earth because you are not allowing anyone to play with your mind, spirit and body. In the manner of Jesus, Rama, Krishna, Sai Baba, you allow your intelligence and awareness to guide you in mind, spirit and body, and yet you remain humble.” (Jan/Feb 1991)

‘The Lord is within’. Maitreya says, “God is not in the sky. God is in the heart.” Although He is in reality everywhere, individuals are becoming aware that it is possible to experience the Lord in the heart. (Sep 1988)

“When all forms are dissolved, you know the Lord in all His Oneness. There is the Lord. The Lord and You.” (Sep 1992)

Individuality

Individuality is the soul. People will come to realize this. Individuality is sacred. (Dec 1989)

Maitreya’s message to the human race is: Be what you are. The entire creation is a Becoming of the Supreme Being of the Lord. Everything belongs to Him. It is the heritage of one and all to enjoy the blessings of life, which are freedom in creation and salvation in the Supreme Being. (Nov 1990)

It is the duty of every individual to be who he is. (Nov 1990)

According to Maitreya, without individuals there is no nation. The individual must become ‘number one’. That individual is your Self. (May 1991)

Market forces should not govern the life of the individual; they have a place, but will have to fall into a perspective where the individual remains sacred. (Jul/Aug 1991)

It is the individual alone who can set himself or herself free from this karmic cycle (the cycle of conditioned human activity). Nations and governments are simply guardians, protectors of the values of life, but they cannot change the individual. Change comes from the individual himself. (Apr 1989)

This is why Maitreya says: “Be what you are. If you are a Christian, be a Christian; if you are a Jew, be a Jew; if you are an Arab, be an Arab, but do not try to impose on yourself a foreign personality because if you do that you are destroying yourself.” (Mar 1991)

“Remain open-minded. Enjoy life. The gift of life flowers within you.         “Experience this and you will realize you are a unique person. You are unique in this creation.” (Apr 1990)
The individual will be important. He will act not out of compulsion, but out of a sense of duty and responsibility towards others, as if he were acting for his own Self. (Dec 1989)

Identity

Be what you are. Identity is sacred. Even when the individual Self merges in the Supreme Being, individuality remains sacred. (Jan/Feb 1991)

Maitreya says: “As the Self is unified in Me so it retains its separate identity.” (Apr 1990)

Maitreya says that the destiny of everyone is to be what they are and not what others are. (Jan/Feb 1991)

Just as an individual’s identity is sacred, so the identity of nations is sacred. The moment mind, spirit and body lose their centre of gravity, breakdown ensues. The same thing goes for nations. (Jun 1989)

Maitreya says that if, in the name of market forces, the identity of a country or the personality of an individual is compromised or sacrificed, this could only lead to chaos and havoc, even war. (Sep 1990)

Maitreya says: “You are trying to sow the seeds of destruction, but you do not have to go far to understand the realities of life. Imagine two brothers. Each has a distinct identity. Evolving in this way, they will enjoy harmony in life. The moment big brother imposes his identity and personality on his brother, friction and fighting ensue.
“When you go to sleep, your identity is still preserved. It does not get mixed up with that of your brother. It remains separate, distinct. Your identity is sacred. If you play with it you will destroy yourself.” (Mar 1991)

If you lose your identity, you are as if blind. Without identity you lead a life of confusion and chaos. (Dec 1991)

Once the identity is destroyed there is darkness. Identity is the space between the Self and the Lord. Without identity there is no life. (Nov 1993)

You should never surrender your identity to anyone, for it is sacred. (May 1991)
