Between 1988 and 1993 Maitreya, the World Teacher, released a series of forecasts and analyses of the current state of the world, as well as fragments of His teachings. Through one of His close associates in the Asian community of London, these were released to Share International for publication and were sent to the world’s media as press releases. Phrased in the words of His associate, Maitreya’s spiritual teachings are arranged here by subject in the hope of facilitating the reader’s study and application in daily life.

Maitreya's Teachings:
The mind

What the human mind is, how it works, and how to avoid being trapped in its functions. (1244 words)

What is the mind? It is nothing less than the blueprint of creation. It is not personal. It is universal, like energy.

In spiritual language, energy is the Spirit while mind is the Holy Ghost. It is like a ghost because it can appear in any form. It can be a human being, a snake, or fire. Anything and everything in creation is in the mind. If the Self is goaded by energy into the trap of mind, then the Self will be caught up in the cyclic evolution known as Karma (cause and effect). But the Self has to undergo the experiences of the mind in order to evolve to the point of full Self‑realization. The mind, of course, can act like God and control and manipulate the energy to achieve anything. But these psychic or magical powers can be very destructive. (Share International, December 1989)

Mind is like a computer; it needs someone to use it. How do you use the mind? Through the agency of consciousness. Consciousness is governed by light. The moment the relationship is articulated between mind‑consciousness‑light, you will see big changes. The rays, the colours, will trigger mind and spirit. Then, even a child of five or six will be able to interpret at a deeper level the structure of the atom. (Mar 1992)

“The mental body or pattern is controlled on the physical plane by the brain. When the mental body experiences disequilibrium, the brain is affected and is not able to control the physical organs.” (Jul/Aug 1990)

Memory is only in the mind. All struggle and care is in the mind. (Dec 1989)

“Oppression, compression, depression are in the mind.” Ideology, as an example, ‘conditions’ the mind. (Jan/Feb 1990)

Suffering, depression and craving for drugs are all states of mind. (Dec 1989)

If you speak the language of mind, you have confrontation, contradiction. The mind is a machine and can be dangerous. (Oct 1988)

Maitreya says: “When a murderer is executed, the physical body is punished, but can you punish the mind? It is the mind, not the physical body, which is responsible for the act. You think you have destroyed the cause of the murder by destroying the physical body. The problem has not been solved. Once dissociated from the body, the mind still has to run the course of its mental life. It acts as an invisible force and comes into contact with another mind in a physical body, and compels it to commit an act of murder. Suddenly a man goes beserk and kills a number of people.” Maitreya says to scientists, psychologists and doctors: Try to investigate this problem.

Even if you multiply the prison population you will not solve the problem if you do not attend to the minds of prisoners. It is important to make the person understand the environment and the Self. Self-realization (a gradual process entailing non‑identification with anger and other destructive emotions and ideas) brings equilibrium in mind, spirit and body. When the mind is still sick it can do mental harm beyond the walls of the prison. (Jan/Feb 1991)

The mind wants to find things out, but inquisitiveness alone creates division. (Oct 1988)

Ask yourself who is trying to acquire knowledge and wisdom. Is it you, the Self? No. It is the mind. When the mind and spirit struggle, you (the Self) are caught in the crusade. (Jan/Feb 1990)

When the mind is quiet, free from dogmatic views, it will absorb the truth. (Sep 1988)

Thought

Human beings are linked to one another. The moment you have a thought it can, in principle, be picked up by anyone, anywhere. (Oct 1988)

If you allow any thought to personify in you, it is not you any longer. That thought possesses you. The law of inertia becomes effective. This is why one experiences attachment, tension, depression. Thought should be like water, fluid and able to change shape. When it personifies, it solidifies. That creates strife. When a thought takes a natural course it never personifies. It fulfils its role, materializes naturally and disappears. (Sep 1988)

It is necessary to understand the power of thought. In many cases, a single, powerful thought has taken hold of the mind, to the exclusion of all else. This is destructive. In order to help the person to detach himself from that thought, it is necessary to lead him to an awareness of the Self, the ‘observer’, the ‘watcher’. The Self is not the mind. This will create a space inside the person and will enable him to free himself. (Sep 1988)

Examine the case of a person who picks up a knife and stabs another. Was he aware before he became a partner in this process? What made him pick it up?

The moment he becomes identified with a loose yet powerful thought whose energy compels him to commit such an act, he is lost. These thoughts are energies akin to ships without rudders. This is because these thoughts are not tied to awareness.

The Self, through awareness, can control these energies. If it abandons awareness, it becomes a prey to these energies. (May 1989)

Knowledge and Wisdom

Wisdom and awareness are particularly relevant because our society places a high premium on knowledge. When the phrase ‘knowledge and wisdom’ is used in this context, what is meant by knowledge is ‘that which gets stored’, whereas wisdom here means ‘knowledge which is experienced’. (Oct 1993)

Knowledge becomes wisdom when it has been experienced. If you do not experience it, then it remains as a role model. The image that comes to mind is a library. Even what you experience can remain stacked up there. The moment you act with detachment, awareness takes charge of you.

According to Maitreya: “You want to achieve salvation from the cycle of birth and death. This means you want to be free of the ‘Big Bang’s’ influence. But knowledge and wisdom on their own will not help you. It is awareness which guides the true Self.” In Maitreya’s view, this awareness is freedom and salvation. Awareness arises as a result of detachment.

The moment the ‘fruit of the tree of knowledge’ was eaten, Adam and Eve became conscious of the things around them. The point here is that knowledge, without detachment, entraps you. It becomes one of the bondages of life.

In Maitreya’s view: “The body needs bathing every day. You also need to bathe your mind and spirit. Your spirit is the source of energy. Your spirit can become exhausted. You need the water of detachment.” (Oct 1993)

Maitreya’s view is that you cannot reach the Almighty through knowledge and wisdom alone. This path can lead you to deities, essentially creations of the mind. In this there is no salvation. (Dec 1990)

Maitreya says: “The universe comes forth from Light. Each and every soul is just a spark of that Light. When that spark of Light comes closer to the whole Light, it merges.” The same thing happens with knowledge and wisdom. When these approach the point where the soul makes an exit (from mind, spirit and body), they dissolve. Knowledge and wisdom as we know it cannot follow the soul (ie the Self). (Sep 1988)

Maitreya says: “You can control knowledge and wisdom. You can use it positively. But it should not take charge of your Self. It should not master you. The moment you are detached from it you master it.” (Oct 1993)
